Exploring Jewelry

COURSE PURPOSE:

In Exploring Jewelry, students will be introduced to a variety of jewelry making techniques. Students will create small-scale three-dimensional pieces through hands-on creative studio experience. The exploration and creation of artistic ideas using basic techniques in jewelry and metal construction will be developed through sketchbook design. Students will develop unique and original ideas through drawing and web based research. Some of the techniques we will learn about will be: wire chain making, working with glass, manipulation of metals; brass, copper and nickel silver, working with resin, and enameling. Students will create one-of-a-kind wearable pieces of jewelry.

Spring 2015 Exploring Jewelry Focus with Guest Artist Nancy Wynn:
Identity/Branding, digital art and entrepreneurial studies.
The students will begin by researching and reflecting on personal branding to develop a better understanding of their own aesthetics. Technology will be utilized— Google Chromebooks, Pinterest, Google Drive and documents—to design an Aesthetics Board and a final personal identity (i.e. logo, color palette, patterns, fonts, etc.). During the semester, each student will produce a jewelry portfolio infused with elements from their designed identity. Additionally, the students will work collaboratively to establish a professional class “jewelry shop.” The students will use their knowledge of personal identity to develop a group identity, which will be showcased at the end of the semester through the Manchester High School market place.
