Advanced Metals and Jewelry

Welcome to the Jewelry Studio!

COURSE PURPOSE:

Throughout the semester students will build on the knowledge learned in Jewelry/Metals 1 to design and create projects.  You will use a variety of metals; brass, pewter, nickel silver, copper and sterling silver.  You will learn more advanced techniques while using tools in the studio safely.  Student exploration and experimentation are encouraged when time allows and when it is appropriate for the project.  You will create a variety of projects from start to finish.

COURSE OBJECTIVES OF CONTENT:

  1. Students will identify the cultural and/or historical influences on the design and manufacture of jewelry.
  2. Students will identify and use a working vocabulary relating to jewelry, tools and metals.
  3. Students will be able to perform many of the following mechanical operations:
  • Design (personal design solutions).
  • Chain Making and wire work
  • Cutting of Metal
  • Reticulation
  • Rolling Mill
  • Piercing
  • Chasing and engraving
  • Fused glass pieces
  • Bezel set fused glass set
  • Advanced Soldering techniques
  • Buffing
  1. Students will maintain a productive work process developing a piece from start to finish.
